GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce held its first energy briefing of 2014 Wednesday.

The briefing updated the Grand Valley on the ways Xcel Energy is using renewable energy.

Energy companies will be required to be at 30% renewable by 2020 and Xcel said they are well on their way to meeting that goal.

“We’re number 1 in wind and number 5 in solar and for us to achieve that I think is a remarkable accomplishment on behalf of Xcel Energy,” said Xcel area manager, Fred Eggleston.

Grand Valley homeowners are experiencing a 2% cost rate impact in conjunction with the renewable energy use, but Xcel said it is one of the lowest rates in the nation.

In addition to the progress in renewable energy Xcel has also made a significant reduction in emissions.
