LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. - The San Juan Basin Health Department is reporting higher than normal cases of pertussis, or whopping cough, in La Plata Count. There's also an increase across the state.

According to the Durango Herald, La Plata County has seen 13 cases of pertussis since Dec. 1. Twelve of the cases involved people ages 10 to 18. The highly contagious disease can be fatal in babies less than one-year-old.

The report goes on to say that in 2014 there were more than 1,400 cases of whopping cough in the state, compared to a five-year average of 119.

The health department recommends people check their immunization status immediately.
