GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Construction crews working to lay a new sewer line at the intersection of North 1st Street accidentally disturbed an old storm line on Wednesday, causing a sinkhole.

Workers have been repairing the damage since 7:00 a.m. and closing one lane of traffic north and southbound on 1st Street. The sinkhole was ten feet in diameter and three to four feet deep.

Workers said this was an isolated incident due to a mislocated line. All other lines have been located.

"There was a storm line that we thought was abandoned, which apparently is not,” said project engineer Justin Vensel.  “Crews are excavating it out and relaying it so it's not a conflict with other utilities that come across North Avenue."

Both lanes north of North Avenue on 1st Street are closed, as well as one westbound lane of North Avenue.

Because of the already ongoing construction, 1st Street south of North Avenue is reduced to one lane in both directions.

A detour is set up at Sherwood Drive, and crews are advising to take 4th or 5th Streets around North Avenue.
