GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Grand Junction Fire and Police Departments responded to a small explosion at East Middle School Wednesday.
The explosion happened just after 11:15 a.m. in the school's boiler room.
It was believed to have been caused by a mechanical issue.
Students were evacuated as a precaution to the football field.
"We drill for evacuations, lock-downs, other safety incidents, and those drills that's really where this comes into play. You drill for that, you wanna know where kids are going, how quickly they can get out, and that's what happened here, we responded quickly, we wanna keep kids safe, and those drills definitely play a part in that," said School District 51's Christy McGee.
Students were allowed to return to class after 11:45 a.m.
The only reported damage was to a vent in the boiler room system.
