MESA COUNTY, Colo. - In the past week, Mesa County Sheriff's Office deputies have been taking reports from all across the county with people being contacted from callers claiming to be from the IRS and demanding money.
The caller tells them they owe money to the IRS and sometimes goes as far as suggesting they hire an attorney, if they try to dispute the debt.
The Mesa County Sheriff's Office says that in all of these scams, the caller's intent is to get your personal information (like a social security number) and then steal your identity or they intend to get payment from you through your debit card or bank account information.
Officials add that residents should not believe or expect their bank, credit card company, or other legitimate agency/entity to request personal information or payment over the phone.
