GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa men's soccer pulled off a historic win on Wednesday night at Walker Field when they defeated the 22nd ranked Colorado Mines Orediggers 2-1. The win was the first over Colorado Mines since the program started in 2007.

"The win is huge for the program and in the RMAC standings. With the group from first to fifth so tight, any win is big," Maverick coach Josh Pittman said.

The Mavericks got the scoring going in the first half when freshman Spencer Jackson scored his second goal of the season. Jackson's goal came in the 24th minute of the match when he dribbled down the near side of the field and his shot deflected off a defender and into the net.

Mines leveled the score at 1-1 just less than three minutes into the second half. RMAC preseason player of the year Tesho Akindele tallied his league leading 12th goal of the season.

"With his size and speed, he is tough to defend," Pittman added about Akindele's play.

The golden goal came with just over ten minutes to go in the match. Maverick Stevie Palma launched a shot from about ten yards inside the midfield stripe that sailed over the Oredigger goalie and into the net. The goal was Palma's second of the season.

Goalkeeper Mich Conrads tallied eight saves and faced 18 shots in the victory.

The win sends the Mavericks to 6-4-3 on the season and 4-2-3 in the RMAC while the Orediggers fall to 8-3-1 and 6-3-0 in RMAC play.

Colorado Mesa came into the match 0-13-0 all-time against the Orediggers and had lost the last seven matches at home.

The Mavericks will return to the pitch on Friday against the Colorado Christian Cougars at 7pm. It will be Youth Soccer Night and all kids will receive a team photo of the men's soccer team.
