MESA COUNTY, Colo. – Authorities have recovered the body of a man found at the Colorado National Monument.

Park rangers retrieved the body of Charles French, 60, of Steamboat Springs from Monument Canyon on Wednesday afternoon.  They were assisted by members of Mesa County Search and Rescue.

Authorities say French apparently fell about 300 feet from a rock ledge west of Independence Monument to the base of the cliff.

Park officials say icy conditions can persist long after a winter storm has passed.  Hikers should be prepared for slippery conditions and are advised to be cautious near cliff edges.
