CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) - The judge in the Colorado theater shooting case has ruled that family and friends of James Holmes cannot ask a jury to spare his life.

The Denver Post reported that Judge Carlos Samour ruled Friday that family and friends may testify about Holmes' character _ but may not give opinions about the death penalty.

Samour also barred any such testimony from shooting survivors or victims' families.

Holmes is charged in the July 2012 attack that killed 12 people and injured 70 at a movie theater in Aurora. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Trial is currently set for October.
