GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. - Colorado Parks and Wildlife closes the swimming area at Harvey Gap State Park due to public health concerns.
Weekly water testing found elevated concentrations of E. coli in the Rifle lake. Officials say the bacteria was most likely caused by recent heavy rainfall.
According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, typically, rain water can carry a variety of contaminants into lake waters, including animal waste.
The lake also has low water levels, making swimming unsafe.
The swimming area will remain closed for the rest of the season.
