GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The Grand Junction Rockies couldn't seem to carry the fireworks over to the Fifth of July, falling 9-7 to the Orem Owlz at Suplizio Field on Saturday.
For the third consecutive game, the GJ Rockies' pitching staff gave up 9 or more runs, raising their team ERA to 5.99, the highest in the Pioneer League.
The Rockies once again jumped out to a big lead in the first inning, sparked by Nate Causey's three-run home run in the bottom of the first. The Rockies ended the opening frame with a 5-1 cushion, but surrendered 7 runs over the next five innings, and they would never regain the lead.
The rubber match between the GJ Rockies and the Pioneer League South Division-leading Owlz is set for Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
