GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Tuesday marked the start of the festivities for the 2014 Grand Junction Rockies season, as the Rockies hosted Media Day at Suplizio Field.
Media gives us a chance to see all the new faces for the 2014 squad, along with the three returnees from the 2013 team (Wesley Jones, Terry McClure, and Dom Nunez).
One of those new faces is Fabian Bohorquez, who just so happens to be the cousin of Colorado Rockies all-star Carlos Gonzalez.
"Yeah he talks to me a lot -- all the time. When I was signed with Cincinnati, all the time he talked to me about how I can find my goals how he did. He's really good, because he talks to me all the time. When I have a problem, I talk to him," said Bohorquez.
Many of the GJ Rockies players come from Rockies' affiliate team in the Dominican Summer League, including Bohorquez. So, they're going through a lot of change, having to adjust not only to Grand Junction, but to the United States in general. That leaves it to the guys who are from the United States to help everyone get up to speed and feel comfortable here.
"Most of them have been there for all of spring training or most of extended [spring training], so we've had some time together to get to know each other. The communication barrier can be tough, but they're going to English class every day; and I know, myself, I try to talk to them every day out in the outfield in batting practice, learn as much Spanish as I can, because, it's hard to be on a team with someone if you can't even talk to them. So, the more you talk to them, the more you build relationships, and it makes it much better," said pitcher Matt Pierpont, who joins the GJ Rockies after pitching last year for the Rockies' Short Season A affiliate, the Tri-City Dust Devils in Pasco, Washington.
The GJ Rockies have a Meet & Greet event at the Ale House on Thursday from 6:00pm-7:30pm. They will also host an exhibition game Saturday, June 14th against the Denver Generals at 6:00pm at Suplizio Field.
The season officially gets underway Monday, June 16th when the Rockies take on the Ogden Raptors in Ogden, UT. Their home opener will be Friday, June 20th versus Idaho Falls at 7:05pm at Suplizio Field.
