GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- You want some fireworks? Then a combined 32 hits, 29 runs, and 7 errors from Friday's Grand Junction Rockies 16-13 victory over the Orem Owlz might do the trick for you.
Prior to a fantastic post-game fireworks show to celebrate the 4th of July, the GJ Rockies provided quite a show themselves. Playing at Suplizio Field for the first time since June 25, the Rockies got comfortable at home early. The GJ Rox erupted for a 12-run inning to start things off, leading the Owlz 12-1 after the first frame.
Things got interesting, however, in the 9th. The Rockies led 16-8 entering the top of the final inning, but the Owlz tacked on five runs to bring it within three. Orem's Ryan Seiz came to the plate, representing the tying run, but reliever Matt Pierpont got Seiz to pop out to end the game.
Rockies catcher Hamlet Marte finished a home run shy of the cycle. He finished the night 3-4 with a single, a double, and a triple, knocking in 3 RBIs and scoring 3 runs.
The Rockies now trail the Owlz by three games in the Pioneer League South Division. The Rox can close that gap tomorrow night as they continue their series against Orem at Suplizio Field. First pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
