GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The NCAA Regional Championship brackets were released Sunday night, and the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Mavericks baseball team can collectively let out a sigh of relief -- for now -- as the Mavs were awarded the top seed in the South Central Region, allowing them to host the Regional Tournament at Suplizio Field.
The Colorado Mesa Baseball team had done pretty much everything they could on their end, finishing the regular season with a 37-10 record, and then sweeping their conference tournament, capping it off with a 4-2 win over CSU-Pueblo in the RMAC Tournament Championship on Saturday.
After that, it was out of their hands, and the waiting game began. The cell phone video above, provided by CMU closer Dakota Behr, shows the excited reaction from the team as they gathered together to watch the selection show Sunday.
The Mavericks (40-10) will see a familiar team in the first round in RMAC opponent New Mexico Highlands University. The Mavs went 2-2 against the Cowboys this season, but those games were played on the road. CMU gets to play them at Suplizio Field this time around, where the Mavs went a perfect 27-0 on the season.
The other match ups in the South Central region are #2 West Texas A&M University (35-19) vs. #5 Tarleton St. University (29-22), and #3 Texas A&M Kingsville (35-19) vs. #4 St. Edwards (39-14).
First round games get underway Thursday, May 15, but the times of those games haven't been announced yet.
