GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - A Clifton resident is sentenced to serve 14 years in the Department of Corrections for the strangulation killing of his "best friend" and sexually assaulting his three year old daughter. Christipher Baker pleaded guilty to reckless manslaughter and aggravated incest on Monday afternoon.
Lawyers involved in the trial said they’ve never seen anything like the Christipher Baker case. Baker was first arrested for sex assault on his daughter in fall of 2013. When he posted bond on those charges, Baker then killed his self-proclaimed best friend Matthew Wilkerson in a drunken confrontation.
“I thought they were friends. Chris had been to my house on multiple occasions. My husband and I even helped Chris out a couple of times ourselves,” said mother to Wilkerson, Linda Southam. “When we found out he had murdered my son, it was quite a shock to the rest of us.”
Presiding Judge Deister sentenced Baker to serve eight years for the death of Wilkerson, along with six years for aggravated incest on his daughter.
The sentence also included thousands of dollars of fines. Baker must pay for all of his daughter’s counseling and child support. The man Baker killed also fathered three children, and Baker is sentenced to pay child support for Wilkerson’s children until they turn 19.
