FORT CARSON, Colo. (AP) - Two of the five soldiers killed by a friendly fire airstrike in southern Afghanistan on Monday were stationed at Fort Carson.

The Department of Defense says 22-year-old Cpl. Justin Clouse, of Sprague, Washington, and 19-year-old Pvt. 2nd Class Aaron Toppen, of Mokena, Illinois, were killed during a combat operation in Gaza Village. They were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson.

Officials said an airstrike was called in after the unit was ambushed by the Taliban. It was one of the deadliest friendly fire incidents in nearly 14 years of war.

Also killed were 24-year-old Staff Sgt. Scott Studenmund, of Pasadena, California; 28-year-old Staff Sgt. Jason McDonald, of Butler, Georgia; and 25-year-old Spc. Justin Helton, of Beaver, Ohio.
