White Defense Shuts Out Cardinal in 14-0 Win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--The Colorado Mesa University Football team held their annual Cardinal and White Spring game at Bergman Field on Saturday morning.
A crowd of roughly 300 people saw the White team defense shine in the scrimmage by holding the Cardinal team to a combined four first downs in a 14-0 victory.
The White defense was led by freshman Mitch Irwin who finished the scrimmage with four sacks. Irwin single handily stuffed a Cardinal drive in the second half with back-to-back sacks of quarterback Aric Kaiser.
The White team jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on their first offensive series.Redshirt freshman Jerreon Dennis ran for a 14-yard touchdown. The White drive went 12 plays and covered 75 yards and was a steady dose of the read option running game.
Cardinal defense stood strong on the next three White offensive series while their own offense stalled. The Cardinal offense had three consecutive three-and-outs.
A Daniel Rankin 14-yard touchdown run concluded the first half of play. Rankin's run capped a four play, 58-yard drive that featured two runs and two passe plays that all went for over 10 yards. The White team led 14-0 going into halftime.
Neither team could establish anything offensively in the second half with both teams forcing a pair of three-and-outs.
The Mavericks will open their season at home against Menlo College from California. The game will be played September 7th at 1:00pm from Stocker Stadium.
