Pitching Propels Mavericks to Doubleheader Sweep

by KREX News Room

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.-- The Colorado Mesa University baseball team got outstanding pitching performances in both halves of the doubleheader on their way to a Saturday sweep of the Metro State Roadrunners.

The Mavericks improve their record to 31-10 on the season and 25-6 in the RMAC. The Mavericks picked up a game on CSU-Pueblo in the overall RMAC standings, moving their lead to a full 3 games. The Roadrunners fell to 11-26 on the year and 8-23 in RMAC games.

In the opener, lefty Jared Christensen pitched 5.2 innings and allowed one run on 4 hits, walked one and struck out 2 to lead CMU to a 3-1 victory. Closer Derek Benham came in and pitched the final 1.1 innings and picked up his 7th save of the season. Christensen is now 9-2 on the season.

Jeff Popick, Colton Little, and Justin Rosales each had 2 hits for the Mavericks. Little hit his 9th double of the season.

In the nightcap, the Mavericks could only muster two hits on the game but Dustin Fackrell delivered the biggest hit. Fackrell belted a 5th inning grand slam to give the Mavericks a 4-0 win. The home run was the first in the newly renovated Suplizio Field.

That would be all starter Dylan Evans would need as he pitched the complete game shutout, allowing just 3 hits, walked one, and struck out 8. Evans improved his record to 4-1 on the season.

The series will conclude tomorrow with a single nine inning game beginning at 12:00pm from Suplizio FIeld.
