No. 19 CMU Makes Statement with Series Sweep Over New Mexico Highlands
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Outfielder and closer Garrett Carpenter said the Colorado Mesa baseball team was looking to make a statement against New Mexico Highlands, and they did just that.
No. 19 CMU edged out the rival Cowboys 4-3 Sunday at Suplizio Field to complete the four-game series sweep.
Last year, Highlands won six of four meetings between the two, one of those knocking the Mavericks out of the RMAC tournament, and another in round one of the regional tournament.
"It feels pretty good to beat them after what happened last year," Carpenter said. "It always stays in the back of your head, especially when they're coming into our house. We wanted to make a little statement, so that's always good."
Carpenter recorded his fifth save of the season and has not allowed an earned run in seven appearances. At the plate, he went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Nate Robertson went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Colorado Mesa leads the Mountain Division with a 13-1 RMAC record. New Mexico Highlands is second in the conference, leading the Plains Division at 10-6 in RMAC play.
