Mavs Walk Off with Doubleheader Sweep

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Junior outfielder Mitch Corwin hit a walk-off single to lift the Mavericks to a 5-4 win over CSU-Pueblo in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

"It was a team effort and everybody just stepped up big," Corwin said. "It's in our favor right now because we're closing games out towards the end of the season, so hopefully that carries over in playoffs."

Senior first baseman Dustin Fackrell hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game up at four.

Senior pitcher Jared Christensen (10-2) led CMU to an 8-2 win in game one of the doubleheader. He pitched five shut out innings before giving up his only two runs in the top of the sixth.

"My whole goal when I come out is to make it to at least the sixth with out letting them score a run," Christensen said. "I have a bunch of guys behind me that are really good at helping me do that."

The left-hander allowed two runs on eight hits, walked none and struck out six.

Junior infielder Justin Rosales, who leads the team in home runs, hit his sixth of the season in the bottom of the fifth.

"Having that run support is incredibly relaxing," Christensen said. "I can challenge the zone, and if the guy takes me hard, so what? It's not that big of a deal. All these guys back here are pulling for you and they're going to put up some runs. You don't have to worry about that."

The Mavs take a 3-0 series lead into Sunday's final game of the series. First pitch at Suplizio Field is set for 12 p.m.
