Mavs Hope to Start Season With a Clean Slate

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--It's a clean slate for the Colorado Mesa football team. There's a different attitude this season, stemming from a completely restructured coaching staff that has one thing in mind: winning.

"The biggest difference is expectations," said senior defensive back Trent deBraga. "We're expected to win. Not in tow years, not in three. We want to win now."

It wasn't the offense stealing the show in 7-on-7 drills Friday at Colorado Mesa's practice field. The defense finished with three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.

The Mavericks finished last in total defense last season, but first year defensive coordinator Todd Auer hopes to revamp the unit.

"The biggest thing to me, which has been my philosophy forever, is getting kids to play hard," Auer said.

Despite being picked to finish 5th in the RMAC pre-season poll, the Mavs look at this year as a fresh start.
