Mavs Eliminated in Regional Tourney, Fall to Cougars 5-2

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Colorado Mesa (26-24 overall) was eliminated by RMAC foe Colorado Christian (34-28 overall) 5-2 at the NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament in Sioux Falls, SD. With the loss the Mavericks season comes to an end. The Cougars will play Winona State later today in an elimination game. The winner will advance to play Augustana on Sunday and need to beat the undefeated Augustana Vikings twice. CMU was eliminated last weekend by the Cougars at the RMAC Tournament.

CMU took the early lead on a two-run homerun to left field by Courtney Maihi scoring Danielle Vallie (walk). The homerun blast came with two outs in the bottom of the first inning.

Colorado Christian jumped on top 4-2 in the top of the third with a one-out rally scoring 3 runs on 4 hits (one error) before the Mavs recorded their second out in the inning. An RBI ground out pushed the lead to 4-2 before the Mavericks recorded the final out.

The Cougars added a run (unearned) in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-2. The Mavericks stranded runners from the third inning on including five runners in scoring position and 11 in the game. In the seventh Shannon McClenahan hit a two-out double to left center. Lisa Pille singled to short and the Cougars closed out the game throwing out McClenahan at home to seal the victory and advance in the regional tournament.

Courtney Maihi gave up six hits, five runs (two earned) with one walk and struck out five. CMU outhit the Cougars 9-6 getting two hits each from Taylor Gross, Megan Smith and Lita Romero.
