CMU Earns NCAA Tournament Bid

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--The Mavericks (39-14) earned the No. 3 seed and will play No. 4 New Mexico Highlands (39-14) in the opening round of the Central Regional on Thursday.

Minnesota State Mankato (44-10) drew the No. 1 seed and will host the tournament.

"Everybody at this level, from here on out, is going to be really good," said manager Chris Hanks. "Really it boils down to who is more ready to play on a given day, and maybe who has a little bit of luck on their side."

New Mexico Highlands has a 3-2 advantage over Colorado Mesa this season.

Hanks says the plan is to start senior Jared Christensen, RMAC Pitcher of the Year, in game one.

Junior Nolan Snell had been the game one starter all season, until last week during the RMAC Tournament.

Christensen pitched game one, and Snell took a 16-5 loss to CSU-Pueblo in the second round. It was his second loss of the season.

"He's just, late here in the season, run into a little bit of shoulder pain," Hanks said. "So we're being a little bit careful with him. We probably won't run him out game one of the tournament. We're going to give him an extra day's rest and evaluate that. We'll see how it plays out."

It's the Mavs' fourth-straight NCAA tournament appearance, the 12th in program history, and 10th under Hanks. CMU made a World Series appearance in 2009.
