Mavericks Put Three Players On All-Region Team But Fall In Opening Round of the Regional

GRAND JUNCTION, colo.- The Colorado Mesa University baseball team fell to the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys 2-0 at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato, Minn. in the First Round of the NCAA Central Region Tournament. The Cowboys scored single runs in the third and seventh innings while the Mavericks were shutout for the second time this season.

Highlands pitcher Jason Sirak kept the Mavericks off balance the whole game and alllowed only six Maverick hits. CMU had only one leadoff baserunner and only two runners reached third base during the game.

CMU lefty Jared Christensen got the start and gave the Mavericks every chance to win limiting the Cowboys to two runs, on six hits, walked none and struck out seven. He received the tough luck loss and drops to 12-3 on the season.

The loss drops the Mavericks to 39-15 on the season while the Cowboys improved to 40-14 on the year.

Colorado Mesa will face 6th seeded Regis tomorrow at 3:30pm.

The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) announced their All-Region Teams this week. The ABCA All-Region Team is voted on by the Coaches in the Central Region who sponsor baseball while the NCBWA is voted on by a panel of people within the Central Region.

Making the 1st Team on both lists was Dustin Fackrell, Jeff Popick, and Jared Christensen. Popick was named to the 1st Team after being named RMAC Co-Player of the Year while Christensen was named RMAC Pitcher of the Year while earning All-Region honors for the second consecutive season.

Braden Box was named to the 2nd Team by both panels. Box was the starting shortstop and hit nearly .400 all season and is currently ranked 2nd in the Central Region in stolen bases with 30.

Closer Derek Benham was named to the 2nd Team by the ABCA and earned Honorable Mention Honors by the NCBWA. Benham finished the season with 8 saves and a miniscule 1.40 ERA

The Central Region's leader in strikeouts was named to the 2nd Team by the NCBWA. Nolan Snell earned his second consecutive nod to the All-Region Team after being named All-RMAC 1st Team last week.

The ABCA also awards a 'Gold Glove' Team. Those awards are given to the top defensive players at each position.

Dustin Fackrell was named the top defensive first baseman in the Central Region and will now have a chance to win the National Award which is similar to what the Major League Baseball players earn at the end of each season.

Colton Schoelkopf and Jared Christensen picked up their second consecutive Gold Glove Awards each being named to the 2nd Team.

Colton Little earned Gold Glove 2nd Team honors at third base as well
