GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--The Colorado Mesa University baseball team fell in the RMAC Tournament Championship game on Saturday to the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves 7-5 at Suplizio Field.
Colorado Mesa forced the 'if necessary' game earlier in the day by beating the ThunderWolves 6-1.
Colorado Mesa starter Joey Danner got the ball in the day's first game and followed in Matt Williams' and Kyle Davis' footsteps. Danner pitched a complete game and allowed one run on 10 hits, struck out seven and didn't walk anybody in the win. He moved his record to 9-2 on the season.
Nate Robertson got the offense going in the bottom of the first inning when he drove a 0-0 fastball over the fence in left field to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead. The two runs would be all CMU needed but added four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Second baseman Braden Box went 4-for-5 in the game with a run scored and an RBI. Box stole his 24th base of the season. He also had four putouts and four assists in the field.
Centerfielder Garrett Carpenter ended his 23 game hit streak after finishing the game 0-for-3. Carpenter scored a run and drove in a run with a sac fly in the sixth inning.
The win forced the if necessary game between the two teams with CSU-Pueblo coming out on top 7-5 and earned the RMAC's automatic bid into next week's NCAA South Central Region Tournament.
The Mavericks threatened in the top of the eighth when Jordan Moore-Leister walked and Justin Rosales singled up the middle. The next batter, Kevin Mitchell lined into a double play to halt the threat and the Mavericks came away with nothing.
Mitchell finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and drove in one. He hit his team-leading 11th homerun of the season in the top of the fourth inning.
Aaron Corwin pitched well in relief of starter Cody Lahman. Corwin went 6.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out 10.
Three Mavericks earned All-Tournament Team recognition. Matt Williams and Kyle Davis earned All-Tournament Team after their starts earlier in the tournament while Braden Box earned the honor after leading the tournament in hits.
