GRAND JUNCTION, colo.-The Colorado Mesa University Women's lacrosse team took on the Westminster College Griffins on Friday, as the Mavericks continued their second season in D-II lacrosse. It was a tough loss for the Mavs that dropped them to 3-7 on the season with four games remaining on the schedule.

The Griffins were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead at 24:16 in the first, but tough defense and a steady offense from the Mavs kept the game close as both teams traded goals until halftime which saw the Mavs on the downside of a 9-7 game. The Mavs were able to pull within one goal with 25:52 remaining in the second, but a five goal run from the Griffins put the Mavs down 15-9 with 10:01 remaining. The Mavs, although young, were able to show they can still fight as they went on a four goal run to pull back within two goals (15-13) with 2:20 left in the game. The effort would prove too little too late, however, as an unfortunate foul from Lauren Wells gave the Griffins a free position shot with an empty net which they easily capitalized on, making the score 16-13 final.

The offense was led by a trio of Mavs as Rachael Sutton finished with 5 goals on 9 shots with 4 groundballs, 5 draw controls, and 1 caused turnover; Lexie Chavez also finished with 5 goals on 9 shots, and added 5 groundballs and 1 caused turnover to her total; and Allie Henderson finished with 3 goals on 9 shots with 3 assists, 6 groundballs, and 5 draw controls. Keri Kopchik would also contribute to the effort as she finished with 2 assists, 1 groundball, and 1 draw control.
