Colorado Mesa's Jeff Popick and Kris Carlson are Taken in Day Three of the 2012 Amateur Baseball Draft

GRAND JUNCTION, colo.-Maverick Outfielder Jeff Popick was selected by the Colorado Rockies today in the final day of the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft, while reliever Kris Carlson was taken off the board in the 35th round by Tampa Bay.

Popick was selected in the 16th round and was the 498th overall.

In his Popick's campaign, he hit .424 with 17 doubles, 3 triples, and 7 homeruns. He also led the club with 65 RBIs and 31 walks and was an All-American selection by the ABCA, NCBWA, and Daktronics.

Popick is the first Maverick selected in the draft since Sean VanElderen was selcted by the San Francisco Giants in the 27th round (806th overall).

Carlson was originally taken in the 2010 Amateur Draft also in the 35th round by the San Francisco Giants out of Abilene Christian (TX) University.

The right-hander made 13 appearances this season for Chris Hanks, giving up 16 runs in 15 innings of work.

There is no official word yet if Popick will begin his professional career here, in Grand Junction.
