GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa football team dominated on both sides of the ball Saturday (Sept. 28) in a 49-11 win over Black Hills State at Stocker Stadium. The win was the first in league play this season for the Mavericks who improve to 2-2 overall.
The Mavericks picked-off an RMAC record seven passes in the contest. Black Hills quarterback Ward Anderson threw six interceptions which also set an RMAC record.
CMU scored 42 of its 49 points off of turnovers.
The Mavericks wasted no time finding the endzone. Michael Brady picked off a Black Hills pass on the third play of the game and returned it seven yards to the BHSU 20-yard line. CMU quarterback Kyle Duran threw a 20-yard pass to Ricky Trinidad on the first play of the drive that lasted just 11 seconds.
The Yellowjackets countered with an eight play 47-yard drive that ended with a 35-yard field goal by Christian Parr.
CMU's second scoring drive of the day started following an interception by Ryan Lendrum. The Mav's needed just three plays to march 31-yards for their second touchdown.
The Yellowjackets turned the tables on the Mavericks on their next offensive possession that started on their own three-yard line. The drive ended after one play as Duran was whistled for intentional grounding and a safety.
Parr added two more field goals for the Yellowjackets to close within three points, 14-11, before the CMU defense came back to life.
Senior Jason Haferman who had replaced an injured Kyle Duran in the second quarter, would lead the Mav's to five straight touchdown drives starting at the end of the third quarter. Mesa compiled just 16 plays over the five drives.
Haferman completed 13 passes on 22 attempts for 162 yards. The Ft. Collins, Colo., product added 11 yards on five carries.
All seven Maverick touchdowns were scored by a different player. The Mavericks also scored on all five of their trips into the red zone.
Senior Jake Edmiston led the CMU defense, who kept BHSU out of the endzone, with 13 tackles and two interceptions. The defense held Black Hills to just 53 yards rushing.
Mesa will play at New Mexico Highlands Oct. 5th.
