Colorado Mesa Drops to 0-3 With Loss to Chadron State.
GRAND JUNCTION, colo.- After a back and forth battle through the first three quarters it was this 54-yard touchdown by Nathan Ross that sealed the 41-30 win for Chadron St. over Colorado Mesa.
“Our kids battled today," said Russ Martin, Head Coach of Colorado Mesa. "That’s a very good football team we went head-to head with. We had a lead there in the third quarter-early in the fourth quarter. We were pleased with the way our kids battled and what we have to do is continue to keep improving, becoming more consistent and I believe that we have the young men that will do that."
Chadron Quarterback, John Mclain threw for an astounding 324 yards and four touchdowns, while Mesa put up a season best 30 points.
“We did a much better job on offense this week, said Deke Cisco, R-fr. Quarterback, Colorado Mesa. "We did a much better job in practice this week. We just have to keep it rolling.”
Now not only was this game the Mavericks home opener beginning the Russ Martin era, but it’s also the first time Bill O’Boyle and Todd Auer have faced off against their old team. O’ Boyle was actually the head coach at Chadron State, while Auer was the defensive coordinator. Now the two are working under Russ Martin at Colorado Mesa. Here’s the Mavericks headman on what this game was like for his assistants.
“The guys that we just played against are the guys they had recruited, the guys they had coached and they’ve developed a great relationship with those guys," said Martin. "It hurts because they’re great competitors, but I’ll tell you what, they are professional guys. They are great football coaches and I am very grateful to have them here.”
Colorado Mesa will look for their first next week traveling to Black Hills State, while Chadron returns home to host Adams State.
