CMU's Aaron Corwin to Play in Exhibition Game for GJ Rockies
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Former Colorado Mesa pitcher Aaron Corwin will get a second tryout with the Grand Junction Rockies in their exhibition game Tuesday night against the Greeley Grays.
Roughly 20 athletes attended the team's open tryout Saturday morning, but the righty stood out to the coaches present at Suplizio Field.
"Aaron really stood out," Grand Junction Rockies manager Anthony Sanders said. "He had a good fastball, and you could tell he really separated himself from everybody else that was here in the tryout."
Sanders said the plan is to have Corwin come out of the bullpen for one or two innings, but doesn't want the second tryout to put too much weight on the former Texas Tech pitcher's shoulders.
"I don't want to put no extra pressure on the kid," the skipper said. "Hopefully he comes out relaxed and does what got him to this situation that he's in now. He's going to get an opportunity, and that's one of the hardest things to get in this game."
As a senior, the Oregon native went 3-4 with a 4.12 ERA for the nationally-ranked Mavericks. He finished with 57 strikeouts in 43.2 innings of action.
