CMU Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader

Grand Junction- The 29th ranked Colorado Mesa University baseball team swept a doubleheader from the UC-San Diego Tritons by scores of 6-4 and 3-2 today at Canyon View Park. The Mavericks improve their record to 5-2 on the season while UC-San Diego drops to 1-6.

In game one, the Tritons scored 4 runs on 4 hits capped by a Triton Garrett Tuck's 2-run double but the Mavericks stormed back in the bottom half scoring 5 runs on 5 hits including a bases clearing double by third baseman Colton Little. The Mavericks tacked on an insurance run in the 7th and closer Derek Benham pitched a scoreless 1.1 inngs to pick up his second save of the season.

Jared Christensen got the start and picked up his first win on the season going 6.0 innings and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits, walked one and struck out 2.

Four Mavericks had two hits in game which included Braden Box, Erik Kozel, Dustin Fackrell, and Tamatoa Demello.

In the nightcap, Jeff Popick's RBI single in the ninth inning of a seven inning game scored Colton Schoelkopf and gave the Mavericks the 3-2 victory. Popick lined a single off Triton pitcher Elias Tuma that bounced out to the shortstop Garret Tuck who made a play but was too late.

Starter Dylan Evans pitched a solid 7.2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, walked no one and struck out 7. Derek Benham came into relief for Evans' and picked up his first win on the season.

Jeff Popick finished the game 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored while fellow outfielder Bobby Cozine finished with 2 runs scored.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series with a single nine-inning game starting at 11:30am (New Time.) The weather forecast is calling for rain tomorrow so stay tuned to cmumavericks.com for the latest game time.
