Bears Roll Over Mavericks

by KREX News Room

GREELEY – Seth Labato threw for 260 yards and a touchdown Saturday and watched his defense force four turnovers as Northern Colorado rolled over Colorado Mesa University 40-3 in non-conference action.

Labato completed 20 of 35 attempts and his 46-yard scoring strike to Dimitri Stimhil in the third quarter broke open a close game and gave the Bears, a NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) school, their first win of the season. Mesa, a Division II school, fell to 0-2.

UNC lead just 10-7 until Stimhil scored midway through the third quarter. The Bears added another score just 22 second later when Leilon Willingham picked up a fumble and returned it 30 yards to put the Bears up 24-3.

A pair of long scoring drives in the fourth quarter, both ending with Tromaine Dennis touchdown runs, put the game out of reach for Northern Colorado, which broke a 12-game losing streak.

The Mavericks struggled offensively. Red-shirt freshman quarterback Deke Cisco completed 10 of 20 passes for 69 yards but was intercepted three times. CMU rushed for just 123 yards in the game, led by Jake Cimolino who picked up 83 yards on 13 carries.

Colorado Mesa opens Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Saturday when it plays host to Chadron State at 1 p.m. at Stocker Stadium.
