Butch Miller Resigns as CMU Athletic Director

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Butch Miller will step down effective immediately as CMU Athletic Director after five-and-half years at the helm of the athletic department.

Miller began his tenure on July 1, 2008 after serving as Associate Athletic Director for five years. Miller cited personal health and family reasons for stepping down.

“I would like to thank President Foster for all his support and I am very grateful for the opportunity that was bestowed upon me at this great university,” said Miller. “I will cherish the relationships I had with my coaches, colleagues and student-athletes and all the support and encouragement over the years,” added Miller.

In his 11 years as an administrator he has been involved in the expansion and development of CMU's state-of-the-art athletic facilities and the addition of 12 inter-collegiate varsity sport programs.

As Associate Athletic Director, Miller oversaw the athletic departments' fund raising, corporate sponsor liaison and served as Golf Card Coordinator from 2003-2008. Prior to his Associate AD duties he served as the Corporate Sponsor Sales Director from 2000-2003.

“I applaud Butch for his years of service and we wish him well” said President Foster. “We will miss his optimistic attitude and boyish charm,” added Foster.

A native of Sterling, Colorado he graduated from Sterling High School where he was a three sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He attended Colby Community College in Colby, Kansas where he was a two year starter in centerfield for the Trojans. Miller transferred to Mesa State College and was a two year starter and two-time RMAC All-Conference centerfielder.

Following his playing career he was an assistant baseball coach for the Mavericks from 1997-2003.

He was named the head women's golf coach in 2004 and guided the women's program to numerous school and individual records. He was twice named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year ('06-07, '07-08).

Miller earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mesa State and his Master's Degree from Colorado Christian University.

An active member of the community since his arrival in the grand valley, Miller was on the Relay for Life committee for three years and served as the Chair for the 2006 Grand Junction Relay for Life.

He has served on the JUCO Committee for the past nine years and oversees the annual JUCO Youth Clinic. He has worked with Partners and been a volunteer with the Special Olympics and American Cancer Society.

Butch has two sons, Skyler (16) and Peyton (14).
