GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Colorado Mesa softball (8-5-1, 5-1-1 RMAC) took 3 of 4 games in their opening weekend at Bergman Field against Black Hills State (2-9, 2-4 RMAC). CMU won the first three games of the series, all run-rule victories, before dropping the series finale, 4-3 to the Yellow Jackets.

Game one on Sunday was the third consecutive game the Mavericks have made short work of the Yellow Jackets. CMU scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to push their lead to 8-0 and shutout Black Hills State to remain unbeaten in RMAC play (5-0-1) and 8-4-1 overall.

CMU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings on a Brooke Ortale RBI-single in the first inning scoring Nicole Robinson (single). Lisa Pille's lead-off home run in the third pushed the lead to 2-0. Ortale's single down the right field line scored Makayla Kovac (double) and a 3-0 advantage.

The Mavericks tacked on three runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Nicole Robinson and two-run RBI on a double to left center by Kovac. CMU closed out the game in the bottom of the sixth on Kovac's second double of the day and Jessica Severinsen's single scoring Kovac, to end the game.

Kovac, Pille and Ortale each registered three hits and combined for six RBI.

Severinsen improved to 6-1 on the year allowing just three hits, one walk and striking out five Yellow Jackets.

In the series' final game the Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the first inning, one run in the fourth, to hold off the Mavericks 4-3. CMU scored a run in the bottom of the second to close the gap to 3-1. BHSU scored what turned out to be the winning run in the fourth on a two-out double to left center for a 4-1 lead. CMU answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a lead-off homerun by Rachel Boothe. A RBI single by Robinson scored Taylor Gross (single bunt) to cut the lead to one (4-3).

CMU registered a hit in each of the final three innings but could not push a run across the plate, snapping their six-game unbeaten streak.

CMU will travel to Regis University next Saturday and Sunday for a four-game series with the Rangers.
