Vern McGee Resigns as Head Football Coach at Central High School

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Vern McGee officially resigned as head football coach at Central High School Tuesday night.

McGee spent 23 years with the program and 17 as the head coach.

He said he had known for a few days, but told the kids at their football banquet.

The Warriors finished the 2012 season 0-10--their worst record since 2006. They also finished the 2011 season 0-4 in conference play.

The 1982 Central graduate said he would love to keep coaching, but really struggled with the fact that kids were choosing to go to different schools because the team wasn't winning.

He added that this is what's best for Central football.

McGee is a three-time Southwestern League Coach of the Year.
