Grand Junction Tops Fruita, 8-4

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Grand Junction beat rival Fruita, 8-4, Tuesday night at Suplizio Field to clinch a spot in the Class 5A playoffs.

"The last out--that's my favorite part," said senior center fielder Marcus Wirth. "Anytime we beat Fruita, I'm happy."

Fruita took a one-run lead into the bottom of the fourth, but Wirth hit an RBI double to tie the game up at four a piece.

"We did a good job early of being aggressive," said Fruita head coach Ray McLennan. "[Casey] Burns certainly pitched a great game and he kind of settled in a little bit. We weren't able to knock him around as much as we'd hoped in the middle innings. I thought Connor Ruckman threw a good game for us and gave us chances. We didn't execute in the middle of the game either, and that's kind of what it came down to."

The Tigers took a 6-4 lead later in the inning on Steven Baldwin's two RBI double. Sean Rubalcaba also hit a two RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to give the Tigers a four-run lead.

"Knowing that we clinched, we've got to make sure we can still have a chance at a league title. You never know about a host down the road, but we kind of burned that early on. We're going to go on the road somewhere in the playoffs and try to beat somebody."
