Palisade Sweeps Steamboat Springs

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo--The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a sweep of Steamboat Springs Saturday at Suplizio Field.

Palisade improves to 17-2 overall and 12-0 in the Western Slope League.

Sophomore Kyle Commette hit a walk-off single to seal the victory in game one, 15-5 in five innings.

Senior pitcher Kameron Pfaff (7-1) got the win and finishes the regular season with a .96 ERA.

"I trust my team to hit the ball and back me up no matter what," Pfaff said. "My pitching coach has been working with me all season to make me better and stronger. I just work hard every practice to get better, and my team's working harder to get better too. We're a good team and we keep winning, so we're going to keep it going."

In game two of the doubleheader, senior Tate Herland finished with a season-high 15 strikeouts en route Palisade's 9-2 victory. He also hit a three-run homer in game one.

"This is what we wanted as a team," Herland said. "We were just talking about it, just getting that first goal out of the way. Now we move on to our next goals."

Among the Bulldogs' next goals is hosting the playoffs, and head coach Steve Moore said he hopes to know by this weekend.

"Now everyone is 0-0, and when we go into the playoffs, these teams are going to be tougher and tougher and tougher," Moore said. "We still have to get better and better and better. Not only in the games, but in practice. The kids know to work hard, and I've got a great group of kids. We'll see what happens next week."

District playoffs will kick off on May 12.
