Lady Wildcats Prep to Open Season Under First Year Head Coach

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Fruita Monument girls basketball will open the season Friday under first year head coach Richard Atkins.

"The transition from one style of ball to another has been challenging," the Texas native said. "I think one thing that's been real positive is the kids have responded well to everything we're trying to do."

The team held a scrimmage against the freshman boys on Tuesday to pick up the tempo and prep for their season opener against Woodland Park.

The Lady Wildcats' non-league schedule is far from easy. They have multiple 5A schools, including preseason No. 4 Regis Jesuit, their second opponent of the season. They'll also face No. 6 Chaparral on December 8.

The reason for the tough scheduling is because Atkins' long term goal is for the Wildcats to be more competitive with the Eastern Slope teams.
