Grand Junction Defeats Central in SWL Finale:Durango Captures League Title

by Josh Moser

GRAND JUNCTION, CO.-Grand Junction (14-6, 7-3 SWL) defeated Central (11-8, 4-6 SWL) 15-0, Thursday night at Suplizio Field.

The win gave the Tigers their seventh win in Southwestern League play and eighth consecutive victory.

However, both Montrose and Durango each won their regular season finales as well creating a three-way tie at the top of the Southwestern League-each team with a record of 7-3.

To break the tie head-to-head match-ups were looked at first, however each team tied. Montrose beat Grand Junction twice, while Grand Junction beat Durango twice, and the Demons bested in the Indians twice.

Henceforth the next round of the tie-breaker rules applied where the team that finished fourth was considered (Fruita Monument). Both Durango and Montrose swept the Wildcats, which eliminated Grand Junction who split on the season with rival Fruita Monument.

By default, Durango wins the title going back to the head-to-head record with two wins over Montrose.

Grand Junction will represent the Southwestern League in Class 5A, while Durango will represent the League in Class 4A. Montrose will most likely be given an at-large bid to the playoffs in Class 4A.
