Fruita's Sean Mulvey Reflects on Former Coach Vern McGee

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--One day after Vern McGee's resignation as the head coach of Central High School football, athletic director Randy Powell said the search for his replacement will begin immediately.

He also stated that McGee will continue to serve as an assistant coach for the Warriors' baseball team as well as the chairman of the P.E. department.

McGee stepped down from the position Tuesday night after 23 years with Central football.

One of his former players is Sean Mulvey, the head football coach at Fruita Monument. As a senior, Mulvey played running back and corner back during McGee's first year as head coach in 1995.

The two spoke a couple nights ago before McGee's announcement, and Mulvey had some kind words to say to his former coach.

"I really appreciated him as a coach," Mulvey said. "I thought I was really lucky and blessed to have the coaches that I did in high school. He was a fun coach to have. He just had a passion and a thrill for the game and made it fun to play. He was a great guy to be around on the field."

McGee's resignation followed the Warriors' 0-10 season.
