Billy Dreher Era Begins at Fruita Monument

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Fruita Monument is set to open the 2012 season under first-year head coach Billy Dreher Thursday against Delta.

"It's a lot more plays," senior Spencer Fair said. "Defense is a little bit different, but overall it's basketball. A little bit more up tempo than last year, but yeah, it's Fruita ball."

Dreher, a former All-American has returned to his Alma Mater where he played from 1986-1988.

"It's always kind of been a dream or goal of mine, if the opportunity was right, to come back," Dreher said. "It feels great to be back."

The Western Slope native comes in as Fruita is in a rebuilding year--having lost key seniors Alex Paddgett and Drew Bridges, who combined for nearly 40 points per game. No one else on the team averaged more than seven.

The Wildcats are looking to claim their fourth-straight Southwestern League title; however, Dreher said this is probably the least-experienced team he's coached.

Tip-off between Fruita and Delta is set for 3:15 at Central High School.
