Rifle - The #4 Rifle Bears say their historic 2011 season is due in large part to the fact that they try to avoid thinking about the big picture.
"I think we do a pretty nice job of making each week its own here," said head coach Damon Wells, "and just trying to go 1-0 in a given week, and that's what this season has been."
The Bears have gone 1-0 all 11 times they've stepped onto the field this year.
That includes last week's first round playoff victory against Roosevelt, which advanced them to the class 3A state quarterfinals.
"We're 1-0 right now," said running back Ryan Moeller. "We want to go 1-0 this week so we can keeping going and get to finals. That would be so awesome."
Moeller is the main reason the Bears completed their first unbeaten regular season since 2002.
He leads the entire state in rushing, with 2,378 yards, 172 more than any other player.
Rifle will need another phenomenal game from Moeller against #5 Windsor.
Windsor has an 80% larger student body than Rifle, and that size is evident along the offensive and defensive lines.
"They're huge," Wells said. "We popped in the tape, put it on the projector, and the projector fell over. That's how big they are. I wish that was hyperbole but it's genuine."
One advantage for Rifle is that it gets the Wizards at home on Saturday.
"I love the fact that we're playing in Rifle," Wells said. "It's a reward and recognition for the work that these kids have put in and what they've been able to accomplish."
