GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- More than 30 men came from all over the region Friday to try out for the Rockies minor league team. Scouters say they want to give back to the community by giving guys a chance to show the organization what they got.

The Grand Junction Rockies are the first minor league team on the Western Slope.

"Sometimes, because of an injury or where they played, guys didn't get scouted, so this is a way to maybe take another look and give guys another opportunity to have somebody in the organization take a look and see what they can do," said Marc Gustafson, senior director of scouting operations. "It's really great to be here in Grand Junction and this is a good thing to do, I mean, we got fans out here watching a tryout camp, which we've never had before. What that shows me is the passion for folks in this area," he said.

Gustafson said they're looking at how the men run, throw, hit, as well as their arm strength.

Gustafson said their rosters are full, but they held the tryout in case someone surprises them or they want to sign someone to another minor league team.

The team's first practice was held Monday. Their first home game will be June 23 at 7 p.m.

There's no official word on whether any of the men made the team.
