Ryan Garvey, Son of Legendary Player, Steve Garvey, to Start Pro Career in Grand Junction

by Josh Moser

GRAND JUNCTION, colo.-Ryan Garvey, the son of legendary player Steve Garvey, signed with the Rockies on Wednesday and will begin his professional career in Grand Junction.

Garvey (Ryan) attended high school in Palm Desert, California and was drafted in the 15th round by the Philadelphia Phillies, but opted to enroll at USC under Head Coach, Frank Cruz.

After spending one semester at Troy, Garvey transferred to Riverside CC--saying that he wanted to focus on baseball and the academic schedule of USC was too demanding. He hit .261 in 38 games as a Tiger, had eight doubles, two home runs and drove in a team-best 22 runs.

The Rockies selected him in the 33rd round of this year's draft, and arrived Wednesday in Grand Junction with his mother, Candice and Father, Steve to sign a professional contract.

Garvey plays all of the corners (his father played first base in the MLB), but does not know yet where he will play for Grand Junction.
