New Rockies Franchise Boasts Three Colorado Natives

by Josh Moser

GRAND JUNCTION, colo.-Grand Junction couldn't be more excited about having a minor-league baseball team, and familiarity with local athletes might draw fans in more quickly.

The 2012 roster boasts three Colorado natives--one Grand Junction knows very well in Colorado Mesa's All-American left-fielder, Jeff Popick.

Popick was taken in the 16th round in this year's MLB Amateur Draft after being named the 2012 RMAC Co-Player of the year for Chris Hanks at CMU.

Jarod Berggren is also on the squad for the second consecutive year. The Erie, Colorado native was a UNC Bear after winning a state title at Broomfield High School in 2006. Berggren hit .271 last season splitting time between the Casper Ghosts (Grand Junction Rockies) and Tri-City (Short Season A).

The third player from the Centennial state is another 2012 draft selection, Ryan Warner. The 2012 Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year in Colorado was the Rockies third round selection this season. Warner is a Pink Creek H.S. alum and turned down North Carolina State to turn pro.
