GJ Rockies' Max White: 'This is What I've Always Wanted'

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Max White, an 18-year-old left-handed center fielder, has always dreamed of playing professional baseball.

Now that the Rockies' second-round pick has signed and arrived in Grand Junction for the 2012 season, that dream is a reality.

"It's been crazy," White said. "Of course, just the dream I've always had. I've always wanted to play professional baseball."

The 6-foot-2 outfielder from Florida was committed to the Gators, the top-seeded team in this year's College World Series, but bypassed his scholarship to go pro.

"I was committed to the college of my choice, which was 15 minutes from home," he said. "But this surpassed that, I mean, by far because every kid's goal is to play professional baseball. This is what I've always wanted."

The top picks from this year's draft, including White, are not in Monday night's starting lineup. Manager Tony Diaz said his general rule is that players have to practice with the team for at least a week before getting to play in a game.
