Warrior Classic Championship Finals

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--After two days of action, The Warrior Classic concluded Saturday night with the championship finals at Central High School.

Paonia, the top-ranked team in Class 2A, finished first in the team battle with 204.50 points.

In the 113-pound final, Paonia's Josh Altman defeated Durango's Matthew Lavengood 8-5 to claim the title.

Another Eagle, Bo Pipher, lost to Olathe's Trenton Piatt in 120-pound championship. Second-ranked Piatt took the crown with a 3-0 victory.

"I'm really never confident when I wrestle Bo," Piatt said. "He's a great wrestler, and you've just got to be prepared."

Arvada West's Payton Tawater, the No. 1 wrestler in Class 5A, defeated Palisade's Dalton Hannigan 9-3 in the 126-pound final. Tawater claimed his second-straight Warrior Classic title.

Grand Junction's Jacob Trujillo pinned Rocky Mountain's Danny Clark to win the 145-pound championship. The top-ranked wrestler in Class 5A is 16-0 with 16 pins this season.

"Feels pretty good," Trujillo said. "I didn't really expect to pin all the way through, but now that I look back, it's a pretty big accomplishment. I'm pretty proud of it."

Marcus Velasquez took the 160-pound title with a 6-4 victory over NUCLA's Tray Sickels.

Velasquez is No. 1 in Class 4A, while Sickels is No. 1 in 2A.

"I thought about all the wrestlers at Montrose," Velasquez said. "Some of the greats that came through and never won it, and I get to say I won it for once."

In the 170-pound championship, Jacob Seely defeated Air Academy's Caleb Cuneio 4-2. Seely is the top-ranked wrestler in Class 5A's 170 pound weight class, while the team sits at No. 5.

"We haven't really been on the map in terms of wrestling," Seely said. "It feels great because I know our team's great this year. I have great teammates, great coaches. Everything is just turning around for us, and it feels great to represent this awesome team I'm on."

Roosevelt's Josh Semmler defeated Paonia's Tyler Kendall 6-0 to claim the 182-pound title.

Paonia's Morgan Rieder pinned Eagle Valley's Ty LaFramboise in the 195-pound championship.

Eagle Valley's Andy Armstrong pinned Pueblo South's Hunter Reinert to claim the 220-pound title.

The final champion was Uintah's Cole Mair, who pinned Paonia's Tony Darling in the 285-pound championship.
