Sharaya Selsor Completes Remarkable Comeback To Help Lead CMU To Their Best Record In School History

by Josh Moser

GRAND JUNCTION, colo.-Chemistry is the word the best describes this season's Colorado Mesa Women's Basketball team. When you watch the Mavericks, the play just flows.

“The group of girls that we have is so special," said senior forward, Katrina Selsor . "We’re all just great friends and you can just always count on them. Just being a college athlete and being part of this team, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience at Colorado Mesa.”

Conference Player of the Year Kelsey Sigl, and sisters Katrina and Sharaya Selsor have led CMU on their best run in program history ---ranked consistently in the top five in the national polls all season. the three are all, All-Conference First Team performers running through the RMAC with a 25-1record in the regular season.

“This win is one of our goals, something we’ve talking about all season long and it’s just great to be able to accomplish it," said RMAC Conference Player of the Year, Kelsey Sigl.

However, this year for Sharaya Selsor might not have ever been, stepping away from the game a year ago to have a baby.

“Literally she is reason I wake up every morning, she is my alarm clock, no, but she is my fuel that drives me through everything," said junior guard, Sharaya Selsor. "She just changed my life in every aspect and I just love her to death."

Now she’s back and better than ever.

“There were a lot of days in the gym where I was like ‘There’s no way I’m going to do this,’ but I’m glad with the decision I made,” said Sharaya Selsor.

With the success of the team this year…. everything has come full circle for Sharaya ---giving her a new outlook on playing the game that she loves.

"It means so much more now because I now understand really what the whole meaning of the game is," said Sharaya Selsor. "The fact that we are having so much success just makes it that much better and that I’m having it with my sister and some of the best girls that I’ve met... It’s just a great experience.”

but the biggest benefactor of Sharaya’s return has been her sister Katrina… the senior has put together one of the best statistical seasons in CMU history and was a unanimous 1st-Team All-Conference selection….

“Just to have the family and the upbringing that me and Sharaya have and of course how close we are and the relationship that me and Carter (Sharaya’s daughter) are building, I’m happy to experience my college career with her and it sucked last year it was an emotional ride for me to do it without her, but I’m emotional because I’m happy it’s my senior year and were doing so well,” said Katrina Selsor.

The final piece to this years magical puzzle has been first year head coach, Taylor Wagner. Selsor says the coaching change was one of the main reasons that she decided to return and that their relationship has allowed her to become one of the best players in the RMAC this season.

“I just love her approach to the game," said Colorado Mesa Head Coach, Taylor Wagner." I think the one thing that I really like is that she reminds me a alittle bit of myself and I love to see her. She doesn’t back down from anybody, she wants to be the best and be on the best team and enjoy it with her teammates and that’s what I have enjoyed the most in coaching her."

But this season is far from over…. you know the Selsor sisters will be ready… and when they’re finally done, they certainly have a little maverick to pass the legacy on to.
