Russ Martin Talks Spring Football
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Three quarterbacks will continue to compete for the starting position when Colorado Mesa holds its annual spring game on Saturday.
Head coach Russ Martin said returning starter Jason Hafferman has improved, but Eric Kaiser and Kyle Duran are pushing him and creating an open competition at quarterback.
"We're going to have some great competition in some areas," Martin said. "That's an exciting thing for us because it creates a competitive edge for the guys. They know they have to play well."
Kaiser is a Broomfield native who transferred from Nebraska-Kearney, while Duran was a redshirt freshman in 2012.
The Mavs return All-RMAC running back Jake Cimolino, but also lose senior tight end Drew Holder to a career-ending knee injury.
The Mesa coaching staff also features a new face in Mike Chavez, who was hired to replace Bill O'Boyle at offensive line.
"Mike and I have worked together for quite a few years," Martin said. "We worked together at Black Hills State. We worked together at Southeast Missouri. So in a way, it's actually a great mesh as far as our offensive system."
The spring game is set for 10 a.m. at Bergman Field.
