Nolan Snell Suspended for CMU's Home-Opening Series

by Claire Brandon

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--Preseason RMAC Pitcher of the Year Nolan Snell has been suspended for violation of team rules and will not start this weekend in Colorado Mesa's home-opening series against Montana St.-Billings.

"Nolan will be out this weekend," head coach Chris Hanks said Thursday. "A little violation of team rules. Nothing too serious, but nonetheless, a rule deal.

"That will give some other kids a chance to pitch, and he'll be back in there when we go to Grand Canyon."

Hanks did not elaborate on which rules had been broken.

The suspension means the Mavericks have an opening in this weekend's four-man rotation.

Tampa transfer Matt Williams will start game one Friday, while Texas Tech transfer Aaron Corwin will get the ball in game two.

JUCO transfer Joey Danner will be on the mound in Saturday's nightcap.

"Some guys on the team haven't really been doing what they need to do," Danner said. "So some people have got to step up. I'm fortunate enough to be given that chance to step up and fill in a spot this weekend, so I'm going to try to do that to my best capabilities."

The fourth spot is still up in the air, and Hanks said a decision will be made Saturday night.

He added that it will most likely be between Garrett Carpenter, Cody Lahman, Kyle Davis and Dustin Robirtis.

First pitch on Friday set for 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, former CMU and Grand Junction Rockies outfielder Jeff Popick will be recognized for All-American honors.
