Mavericks Stampede Yellowjackets in Sweep

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.--The Colorado Mesa University softball team had their home opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Bergman Field against the Black Hills State Yellowjackets. The Mavericks swept the doubleheader winning by scores of 10-0 and 11-3 to stay perfect in RMAC competition. CMU is now 7-4-1 on the year and 6-0-1 in RMAC games while Black Hills State is now 1-8 on the season and 1-3 in the RMAC.

In the opener, the Mavericks led 1-0 through three innings of play but exploded for five runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to pick up the mercy rule 10-0 win. Jessica Severinsen hit a walk-off three run homerun to end the game.

Severinsen finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a run scored and the big homerun. She also earned the win in the circle, pitching five innings and allowed just three hits while striking out seven.

Nicole Robinson also finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBIs, two runs scored, a double and a triple.

In game two, Colorado Mesa trailed 2-1 heading to the bottom of the third inning. The Mavericks erupted for 10 runs on five hits in the frame capped by Makayla Kovac's grand slam. Brooke Ortale also added a two-run homerun in the inning and walked away with an 11-3 win.

Kovac finished the game 1-for-3 with five runs driven in to pace the Maverick offense.

Courtney Shreves picked up the win in the circle and improved to 2-3 on the season. Shreves finished the game allowing three runs on three hits, walked two and struck out six.

The two teams will conclude there series with a doubleheader tomorrow at Bergman Field, starting at 11:00am.
